Manchester Film Co-op
OK, so this is an extraordinary film. In The Lost Honour of Kathrina Blum, it is Heinrich Boll’s unblinking moral gaze on postwar German society that gives this film its narrative power, but what it says about the power of a malign press to destroy the lives of innocents will have resonance in any contemporary society.
Angela Winkler is heartbreakingly vulnerable as the lonely caterer who becomes the target of a press hate campaign after a brief assignation with a dishy terrorist (Juergen Prochnow, before he became a star in ‘Das Boot’) during the Cologne Carnival.
The film and book stem from an era when Germany was convulsed by Baader Meinhof and RAF terrorism, and maybe that helps explains its claustrophobic atmosphere.
The film is being screened on Tuesday 21 June. The films starts at 7.45 and will be followed by discussion. Entry to film £3 or £2 for unwaged, low waged, students or OAPs.
