The Wheels of Capitalism: First Wheel: Dispossession/Expulsion/Enclosure
The machine of capitalism, the Zapatistas in Chiapas say, has (at least) four wheels: dispossession (also understood as expulsion or enclosure), disdain, repression, and exploitation. The machine itself steamrolls, shreds, sucks in, churns out, extracts, ploughs away,…
In 2016 Manchester Zapatista Collective will run a series of workshops which create time and space for us to do some joined-up, shared, collective thinking on capitalism’s wheels.
On Saturday 12th March we start with a workshop on dispossession/expulsion/enclosure. Which forms does it take in different places (privatization, eviction, displacement, environmental destruction, mining, gentrification,…)? How does this wheel operate in different calendars and geographies? What is it made of? What does it do? How does it keep running, and who keeps it running? How does it link to the other wheels? Which spanners can we throw into it? How can we block it, take it off, stop it from functioning?
We will share analyses and experiences from our own calendar and geography, and from the calendars and geographies of those who are part of the global Zapatista networks. There will also be an update on recent developments in the Zapatista territories in Chiapas, Mexico.
You are welcome to attend any one or all of the workshops.
What to bring: an open heart, an engaged mind and, if you have them, pen and paper.
Analyze – Debate – Organize
Manchester Zapatista Collective is part of the global Zapatista networks. We are committed to the Zapatista principles of Democracy, Freedom, and Justice; to autonomy and dignity; and to the resistances and rebellions that build autonomy for humanity and against capitalism. We learn from and organize with the Zapatistas in Chiapas and the Sixth International.
