The Great War – myths and realities uncovered
The Working Class Movement Library’s exhibition, The Great War: myths and realities, opens on Wednesday 6 August. It explores topics such as Salford’s response to the outbreak of war, the strength of the anti-war movement locally and nationally, what happened to the campaign which had gathered momentum by 1914 to get the vote for women – and the realities of trench warfare.
On this anniversary of the start of the First World War the Library wants to commemorate it, but to do so honestly. The exhibition introduction states: ‘We will not remember the “lost” or the “fallen”. We will remember 16 million dead whose lives were not given but were taken from them by politicians and generals’.
Veronica Trick, a member of the volunteer exhibition team, said: ‘By camouflaging this hideous event with heroic language we make the next war more likely. We believe that there is only one morally acceptable way to remember WW1 and that is to look honestly at past wars to develop strategies for the prevention of future wars.’
The exhibition is open during the Library drop-in times, Wed-Fri 1-5pm, until 19 December.

Manchester Zapatista Event
26th September 2014: Police in the Mexican state of Guerrero kill six people and take away 43 students, who have since become victims of enforced disappearance.
‘Manchester for Ayotzinapa’ invites you to an evening on the background to these events. Short videos and speakers will explain the intertwinement of government agents and organized crime; and the reasons for this crack-down on student teachers from some of the poorest and most marginalized communities of the country, and on teacher colleges with a radical pedagogy for popular education and social change.

Wonderstruck
It’s not what you know, it’s what you do.
Come and hear the sound of a hundred voices as choirs and performers from across Manchester join forces at Manchester Museum. Inspired by awe and wonder at the Museum’s collections, writer/performer Daniel Bye, musician Boff Whalley and director Sarah Punshon have created original songs for a weekend of musical surprises.
Performances will begin at 11am and 1.30pm in the Museum reception area. You could follow the performers and experience the whole 70 minute cycle, or simply enjoy encountering musical surprises as you explore the Museum.

The government are planning to build a new prison in for the North West of the UK in Wrexham that will warehouse more than 2,100 prisoners, making it the second largest prison in Europe!
In response Community Action on Prison Expansion are working with local and national contacts to organise a new campaign against Prison Expansion in the UK.
There will be a public meeting in Manchester to share information about the prison and to start organising locally.
The meeting will be held at 19:00 on the 19th November at the Friends Meeting House, Central Manchester.
The anarchist and working class movement have a long and continued history of repression though imprisonment both nationally and locally. Could you please help spread the word about the meeting within Manchester Anarchist Bookfair group and share the event on your social media and internal communications. Like all prisons the North Wales Prison Project will imprison poor, working class people, individuals with mental health challenges & learning disabilities, abuse survivors as well as people of colour and immigrants. The prison will cost more than £250 million to build.
Why Organise in Manchester?
Several of the companies involved in the project are all based in Manchester, including the main construction company. Opposition to the prison will need to be taken to the companies themselves.
